CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD – WE THE PEOPLE

The only thing that has remained constant, if not risen to lower levels, if that is a thing, has been the discourse. Sinking to new lows every day, especially this political season, and that too coming from the highest chair, while certainly shocking, has not been unexpected. For it is from the abundance of the heart, a man speaks, and speech, well, it has been vitriolic, putrid, rank and foul, the stench overwhelming. Much can be said to explain it away, that of humble origins, the lack of finesse or social graces, or even the lack of command of the language, but the sheer bigotry and raw, visceral hate looms large, overshadowing all pretense,...

The choices we have to make, whether to simultaneously develop a thick hide to the ‘terrorist’, ‘illegal immigrant’ tag we are labeled with when any untoward incident occurs, or to NOT develop a cold, cynical heart precisely because of all of the above. The silence from the mainstream media and the apathetic indifference from the rest of the country, family members (yes them) included makes one wonder, do we really matter? The newly relaunched #BharatJodoNyayYatra flagged off yesterday in Manipur but the alacrity with which the convoy passed through the state has been, let’s say hardly surprising but yes, disappointing indeed. There was none of the meeting with the general public to get a sense of how they have been coping, horrendously I might add, over the past year of sorts. April is almost upon us and with it the elections. Appallingly, everything surrounding this particular race for the ballot has been gravely disturbing to say the very least. One thing stands out starkly not just for this election, but a singularity that seems to echo all across the world. A great chasm between one party and the next, the battle lines drawn to preposterous extremes. Earlier there were also these, differences, of course, of opinions, of ideologies, of party systems and beliefs. And there was discourse, healthy debates, the war of words although biting and sharp in its reproach, yet never crass or insensitive or below the belt.
