What shall I give?
What can I give?
To the one who gave
Ransomed His all?
With arms outstretched
The universe entwined
Through the thresholds
Of time, the passages
Of Hell.
When can I believe?
How can I believe?
That there can be
That ever there was
Such love, unimaginable
Unfathomable, He
The I am,
Dying for me.
How to believe?
How not to grieve?
How to hope?
How not to disbelieve?
When all I see
And all I’ve known
And all that I am,
Is darkness bound?
This too is yours,
His promise to me
This land, the kingdom
The royal ancestry.
What did it take?
What will it take?
This, the heir and privilege
Bestowed and free?
Crimson bled
Pierced sides and flayed,
A crown of thorns
Gnarled, knotted on His head
Who could do this?
Why would He do this?
What measure
Of love is this
That for mere
Mortals, the King
Should die and bleed....
